"But if I don’t keep writing, if I don’t keep trying to move myself and move the genre forward with personal experiences and experimentation, then I feel I would have failed." Guest list and covers on 'Bridges'There are a handful of cover on "Bridges," including a duet with Sarah McLachlan on Snow Patrol's "Run," the Celine Dion hit "S'il suffisait d'aimer" (because, as Groban says, "I love Celine") and "Bridge Over Troubled Water," a song he first performed at Paul Simon's request.He met Nettles at President Barack Obama’s inauguration concert in D.C."We weren’t singing together but we were on stage, looking out a million people," he says, "And we were like, “I love your work,' 'I love your work, too,' 'We should sing together.'"When he noticed that one of the songs he and his co-writers had written for "Bridges" had a bit of a country feel to it, he reached out to Nettles, who used her day off on the Sugarland tour to come in and record.The duet with Bocelli, he says, was 20 years in the making.Groban was famously pulled out of high school by producer David Foster to stand in for Bocelli, who was ill, and rehearse a duet with Dion for the Grammy Awards."Standing in for him when I was 17 in 1999 was a moment that changed my life forever," Groban says. So whenever you have an idea that’s yours and the courage to go ahead and take it to fruition and see the response from fans who say 'That meant so much to me,' 'This is my wedding song,' 'This got me through my depression,' that’s the connectivity that makes this just as scary, just as fun, just as invigorating at 37 as it was when I was 17. "You could just find songs and sing the hell out of them. Becoming the light we need in 'Bridges'"When you’re recording music at the same time that a lot of divisiveness, fear and anger are going on in the world, you feel this sense that as an artist you’ve got an opportunity to hopefully bring people together and be a light when it feels like there’s a lot of darkness," he says. "So I wanted to make an album that reflected that optimism."There are some shades of darkness on this record – certainly, a song like “River,” where he speak about anxiety and depression for the first time."There are plenty of incredible songwriters out there," he says. The other reason is he felt the world could use a little pick-me-up.
Seventeen years down the road from the release of that self-titled album he dropped out of college to make, he's now a Tony-nominated Broadway star with his own Netflix series, "The Good Cop.""I got a letter from Andy Breckman, the creator, saying 'Hey, I know this is coming out of nowhere but I’d like you to be the title character on my new Netflix show,'" Groban says with a laugh. It will come back around in some way." On becoming 'The Good Cop'It certainly has for Groban. You’re never actually just saying goodbye to something. "And if you walk through doors for the right reasons, you’re always surprised at how full circle things can be.
